My work is exhibited mainly in galleries, so I am always thinking of my collection as a whole. When my knitwear is displayed as a body of work, there must be a coherence; there must be harmony and balance. It must complement its surroundings and it must make you stop, look and want to touch...
Where it all begins...
Most of my designs are inspired by a place I have visited, something that I have seen or experienced. Often on my frequent walks around Cornwall, I visit places that are special to me and I feel inspired either by the colours or the aura of a place. I often sketch, not so much for detail or an accurate representation, but so that I can work with the colours when I get back to my studio. One of the most enjoyable parts is working within the constraints of colours available from the wool spinners in order to capture a mood. I often blend two yarns together to get just the right tone. My scarves especially reflect the ambiance of that special place, a moment in time captured and represented in a beautiful, wearable item. Sometimes the beauty of the landscape in Cornwall is so intense and breathtaking, you just want to hold it in your hands - that's what I try to create when I sit at my knitting machine.
I always feel inspired to create when I am in my studio - especially now that my workshop is in the gallery. I am surrounded by sources of inspiration. One of the greatest pleasures is the transformation of cones of yarns into the finished article.I start with the multitude of different colours of yarns on the shelves, each promising something different. The gentle whirr of the knitting machine is mesmerising and you have to concentrate with your whole being to ensure that the pattern is perfectly executed. Each piece is then finished by hand. I work my design ideas and techniques into the garment adding texture and contrast along the way. I have always been very influenced by Japanese simplicity. In a finished item I always look for balance. My goal is to create something that is totally unique and unlike any other work out there. I want people who wear my designs to know that they have something very special which sets them apart... I want my work to stimulate the senses: the softness to the touch, the boldness of the colours, the reassuring closeness of the cut. People must feel that if they purchase a Corinne Carr garment, they are acquiring something that has been thoughtfully and lovingly produced - because it has... |
